Climate

What’s The Climate Like In Costa Rica?

One important thing you should do before coming to Costa Rica is see what season you’re going to be coming in. This is a very important factor because who wants bad weather to ruin your hard earned vacation, right? Let’s take a look at some of the best times to come and visit this beautiful paradise.  The climate is tropical year round and the seasons are based off of how much rain falls during a particular time. This country is located just north of the equator and unlike most countries which have four seasons, Costa Rica only has two seasons, the rainy and dry season, otherwise known as the winter and summer seasons. Here’s some important information on both seasons:

The dry season starts from mid-December to end of April. This is the best time to come and visit if you have a chance in my honest opinion. Most people in the states and overseas are bundled up wearing boots, thick socks, gloves and a wooly jacket to keep themselves warm, while here you’ll be wearing a t-shirt and most likely getting sun burned chilling on beach. The perks about coming this time of year is that you can expect the weather to be sunny, clear and warm. One of the negative things is that it’s the high season, meaning places will charge you more for their services or rooms. Living here for over 11 years, I would recommend coming at this time and paying a few extra bucks for a better chance of good weather. Another question people ask me is how humid is Costa Rica? To be honest it depends on where you want to go to.  It's more humid on the Caribbean coast than the Pacific side.  If you’re traveling to Guanacaste, located in the north western part of the country, then you can expect it to be pretty hot and humid for the most part also, but if you visit the Central Valley area then it won’t be that severe. If you go to the beach during the summer season then yes, you can expect lots of sun and humidity.

The rainy season starts from early May to mid-December.  How rainy is rainy exactly?  Well to be honest each rainy season is different. Last year’s rainy season, in 2018, was more like summer with the majority of rainfall in December to mid-January, but in 2019 it’s been rainy and cloudy for the majority of the time. Usually the mornings start off nice and sunny, but near the afternoon is when it starts raining and continues on and off till the evening time.  The perks about visiting Costa Rica within these months is that the majority of the tourism sector and hotel rooms are offered at a lower price. Lots of places are eager to have your business and will lower the cost to have you go, since it's a low season in general for tourism. The only possible negative thing is that the weather might not be in your favor, so I would recommend to check the weather before you come. One question I get sometimes, but very rarely is, is there snow in the winter season? No, I repeat, no there is no snow, skiing or snowboarding here even though the majority of people would love to experience a white Christmas here.

Just remember before you visit Costa Rica to take into consideration what season you’ll be coming in to know what to bring. There are many fun activities you can do while on your trip, but either way hopefully when you visit the weather will be great and you’ll have a blast!
